The Great Break
In the year 2020, something broke. Not with a bang, but with a shimmer.
Across the globe, strange, translucent membranes, described by survivors as soap bubble-thin walls, began to appear in isolated pockets. Cities. Forests. Oceans. Deserts. These shimmering domes, later called Fields, enclosed alien landscapes. Entire regions blinked, transforming overnight into impossible mosaics of interwoven terrain: suburban sidewalks blended into copper sand dunes; subway tunnels opened into alien jungles; rusted playgrounds stood next to obsidian ziggurats praying to unknown Gods.
The terrain inside didn’t match. The sky glowed wrong. Time ran unevenly. And within these bubbles were people, not altered versions of our own, but entirely separate citizens, speaking foreign dialects and following different physical laws. Their homes and cities, entire civilizations, were different. The kind of "different" that shouldn’t be possible.
The Collapse
All the bubbles popped, simultaneously, across the world.
The energy signature was unlike anything measurable. When the Fields collapsed, they didn’t vanish, they merged. Their contents were forcibly woven into the fabric of Earth. Buildings fused. Languages mixed. Populations doubled. People from other Earths, fully intact, fully aware, found themselves stranded in a new, unfamiliar world.
For ten days, panic ensued as people rioted. Governments fractured. Faith systems collapsed. People from all realities screamed into the dark.
Madness.
Then, on the eleventh day…
It stopped.
Mass Recalibration?
Somewhere, something shifted. Not in reality, but in perception.
Overnight, the panic dissolved. The trauma faded. People still remembered the event, but with disconnected acceptance. Memories warped. People now walked past holographic graffiti, ordered takeout from lizard people, and shrugged off a stranger's flaming head like it was nothing.
A collective mental recalibration had occurred, and no one seemed to mind.
From that day forward, the world referred to the event only as The Great Break, as if it had always been there, as natural as the moon or gravity. And life went on, not unchanged, but realigned.
Tuning and the Rise of the Impossible
Out of this phenomenon emerged new powers and disciplines, most notably, Tuning, a fusion of applied science and metaphysical manipulation. No longer just theory, now everyday people could throw fire, wield giant weapons or run on walls.
It was the stuff of video games and fiction. But nobody blinked. The concept of "pseudo-magic" became normalized. People crushed concrete with bare hands. Others communicated with living data. Yet to ask why was met with a shrug. Something in the collective unconscious kept people from thinking about it or analyzing how this happened. When someone attempted to, their head would grow fuzzy, then blank, and then reset to just before the thought occurred, erasing it.
This was normal now.
Leaps and Bounds
When the Fields collapsed, the fusion of realities didn’t just bring strange people and bizarre landscapes. It also brought technology decades or even centuries ahead of what the modern world had developed. Entire cities from alternate Earths arrived fully intact, complete with hover cars, atmospheric recyclers, nanite medical injections, and energy weapons.
Over the past five years, this foreign technology has been reverse-engineered, repurposed, or casually integrated into daily life. You might find a neon-lit cyber-bazaar two blocks away from an old gas station, or see a kid playing with a drone powered by quantum shards.
Society didn’t replace what came before. It just layered the future on top of the present.
Theories
The truth of what happened remains fragmented. Scholars, agencies, and rogue scientists offer theories:
-
A memory virus altered global cognition
-
A collapsing multiverse imprinted itself onto this one
-
Humanity crossed a threshold it wasn’t ready for—and adapted too well
But no theory can explain how billions of minds changed overnight… without resistance.
“The world broke. But the break wasn’t jagged. It was smooth, clean. And now it fits better than it ever did before.”
—From the first Sermon of the Undivided
What is a Warp Field?
"Warp Field" is the term used to refer to a field of distorted space, where alternate realities have collided and overlapped, inhabiting the same area. Warp Fields are usually contained to a specific area, with a bubble-like spatial membrane. Using specialized equipment these bubbles can be breached, allowing Warp Field Investigators (WFI's) to traverse into the overlapped realities, find the source anomaly, and solve the problem, returning the alien reality to its original place in the multiverse.
Warp Fields can contain anything within them that can exist in any reality. Some may be benign and harmless, while others can result in catastrophic and planet altering threats just waiting to get out. Some fields can be left well enough alone, allowing the owner of the investigating rights to exploit it until it has nothing left or suffers a Field Collapse. Others may have dangerous entities that lurk within, requiring a team of WFI's to resolve the anomaly, and return the space to its original reality.
Field Collapses
"Field Collapse" is the term used to refer to a field of warped space becoming fused permanently with our reality. The bubble around the Warp Field disappears, and the overlapping realities become a part of the norm. The world has experienced a number of Field Collapses, allowing the native Beings to coexist in this world and changing the landscape of a modern society to a hodgepodge of genres and different times.
As with most things, a Field Collapse is not always a bad thing, but it is not advisable to allow them to happen at a whim. Sometimes they must be avoided at all costs, for irrevocable damage could be wrought to the world. As it is, a Field Collapse can alter the direction of the story and world in any number of ways.
Players in a campaign must decide whether or not to leave a Warp Field be, farming it for all it's got, or resolve it and get rid of it as quickly as possible. All Warp Fields can be considered a ticking time bomb, waiting for a Field Collapse.
How Long a field takes to suffer a Field Collapse is up to the GM and what is inside it.
The Role of a Warp Field Investigator
Warp Field Investigators play a crucial role in untangling the mysteries that arise from the collision of realities. As a Warp Field Investigator, you are tasked with navigating the unpredictable landscape of warped space, investigating anomalies, and confronting the bizarre entities that emerge from the interweaving of different dimensions.
The Mission:
-
Investigate strange phenomena.
-
Uncover the secrets hidden within warped spaces.
-
Navigate unpredictable and ever-changing landscapes.
-
Confront otherworldly beings and entities.
-
Seek the truth behind the overlapping realities.
Corporate Rivalry Amidst the Unknown
The daily life of a Warp Field Investigator is not without its challenges. Corporate rivalry fuels the competitive nature of warp field investigating agencies. These organizations vie for supremacy, each seeking to establish dominance in the exploration of the unknown and the exploitation of the mysteries that warp fields offer.
Key Aspects of Corporate Rivalry:
-
Resource Competition: Agencies compete for funding, advanced technology, and access to valuable information.
-
Technological Advancements: Each agency strives to develop cutting-edge technologies to gain an edge over its rivals in the investigation of warped spaces.
-
Exploration Rights: Securing the rights to explore specific warped regions becomes a source of contention, leading to intense rivalries between agencies.
-
Intellectual Property: Discoveries made within warped spaces are highly coveted, and agencies fiercely guard their findings as proprietary secrets.
